How to Play Pickleball on Tennis Court

Pickleball courts are only 2 feet longer than tennis service boxes (the boxes closest to the net on the tennis court). When compared to the long lines on a pickleball court, the singles lines (the long lines closest to the middle of the court) on a tennis court are just 3 12 feet wider on each side. This makes it easy to temporarily conver a tennis court for your pickleball game.

To play pickleball on a tennis court, you'll need some sort of court marking, such as cones (you can use water bottles, clothing, or pretty much anything that will not permanently or semi-permanently mark the court). You should not use chalk, paint, or tape without the permission of the court's owner or manager (or any other permanent or semi-permanent markings).

Guidelines to Setting up a Pickleball Game on a Tennis Court

The parallel service box lines will form the backline of your pickleball court.

Second, the centerline of your pickleball court will be the same as the midline of the service box.

There are two fencing options for your pickleball court:

A tennis court sideline should be drawn three and a half feet away from each singles line. Walking can suffice; just make sure to use the same foot for each line. A few cones or other things can be used to indicate the sidelines. Please presume that the ball is "In" when a line is drawn near to it.

One option is to utilize the singles lines on the tennis court as your boundary lines. Because the court will be much wider than a typical pickleball court, more side-to-side movement will be necessary. If you don't have enough cones for other markers and can physically cover the extra court, this may be your best option.

Finally, establish a "kitchen," or no-volley zone. You must demarcate only this region if you wish to play pickleball on a tennis court. After all, pickleball gets its own flavor in the kitchen. Place your markers 7 feet back from the net in the direction of the baseline to demarcate the no-volley zone. We recommend setting two or three markers, one on each sideline where it meets the kitchen line and another on the centerline, to avoid undue disruption of play. Obviously, you should not endanger yourself or others by utilizing dangerous markings.

Tennis requires a net that is two inches higher than a pickleball net. There are two options available to you:

  • The tennis net in the center can be lowered by two inches. To accomplish this, slide the tennis net's central strap to one side by about an inch. The tennis net's central strap should not be altered or adjusted in any way that will not be undone after the match. The net will lose tension and become unsuitable for tennis and pickleball if the strap is left off to one side.
  • Keep the tennis net in place. This may throw your game off or lead to you developing bad habits
